What you need to know: U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis, a dedicated friend to the cryptocurrency cause, has decided to step down from the Senate after her first term. In a statement, Lummis said she no longer has the energy for another six years, but she intends to deliver important legislation to President Donald Trump's desk next year.

U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis, undoubtedly one of the closest allies of the cryptocurrency industry in Congress, announced in a statement on Friday that she will not seek re-election.

This first-term lawmaker will resign after her six-year term ends in January 2027, leaving a Republican seat in the deeply conservative state of Wyoming, but also meaning the loss of a key ally for the digital asset industry. Lummis was the inaugural chair of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee’s first subcommittee dedicated to crypto affairs, making pro-crypto legislation her top priority.

Even now, she remains one of the main negotiators of the crypto market structure bill, which will bring members back to the negotiating table after the holiday break. She will still be involved in what could be the final sprint toward the industry’s top legislative goal in 2026.

“Deciding not to run for re-election truly represents a change in my heart, but during this fall’s difficult and exhausting session weeks, I have come to accept that I do not have the energy for another six years,” Lummis said in her statement, which was released before Congress adjourned. She compared herself to a sprinter running a marathon. “The energy required does not match,” she said.

Lummis has repeatedly introduced bills aimed at paving the way for regulatory acceptance and government embrace of cryptocurrency. These bills include broad market structure efforts, crypto tax proposals, and legislation to establish a government bitcoin reserve.

Although the 2026 congressional midterm elections will be a high-stakes political battleground, with the majority in both chambers at risk, Wyoming has not had a Democratic senator since the 1970s. In Lummis’ 2020 campaign, she won nearly 73% of the vote.

“I am honored to have President Trump’s support and the opportunity to fight alongside him for the people of Wyoming,” Lummis said in her statement. She stated that she will “do everything in my power to deliver important legislation to his desk in 2026 and maintain common-sense Republican control of the U.S. Senate.”
