Key Points Summary
- Meta is testing an Instagram TV app for Amazon Fire TV devices in the US, allowing users to watch Reels short videos on a larger screen.
- The app will initially focus on providing a high-quality viewing experience and short videos, with potential future expansion to more devices and eventual monetization.
Meta is launching its Instagram TV app on Amazon Fire TV devices in the US, marking the platform's effort to bring Reels to living room screens.
The app will focus on vertical short videos no longer than three minutes, offering algorithmically curated channels based on interests such as music, sports, and travel.
Instagram Vice President of Product Tessa Lyons stated that the company will gradually expand to more devices in the future, but currently prioritizes user experience over profitability. Although Reels videos will be played on TV, they will remain in vertical format and will not be reformatted to fit widescreen displays.
This move marks Meta's renewed attempt to challenge TikTok and YouTube, aiming to become a video platform beyond smartphones. Unlike IGTV, which supported long-form video content before shutting down in 2022, this new app focuses on short-form Reels videos.
Each TV account can be linked to up to five Instagram accounts, and Meta will apply broad content standards to filter out sensitive content that may not be suitable for teenage viewers.
