AI-Powered Health Tracking: A New Era of Personalized Wellness

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have enabled health tracking platforms to leverage both structured and unstructured information, offering users more comprehensive and actionable insights. The focus has shifted toward designing user-friendly tools that encourage consistent meal and workout logging, supported by intelligent AI assistants that provide ongoing guidance in areas such as diet and fitness.

On Tuesday, Healthify—a health tech startup backed by Khosla—unveiled an upgraded version of its digital health assistant, Ria. This new release allows users to interact with Ria in real time through voice conversations and by using their phone’s camera to input food details.

Powered by OpenAI’s technology, Ria now supports over 50 languages, including 14 from India, and can even handle mixed-language inputs like Hinglish or Spanglish. While OpenAI models form the backbone of this update, Healthify has indicated openness to integrating other AI models in the future as needed.

The enhanced Ria assistant enables users to request health summaries for specific periods—such as daily, weekly, or monthly overviews. By aggregating data from various sources like fitness trackers, sleep monitors, and glucose sensors, Ria delivers insights on activity, sleep quality, readiness, and blood sugar fluctuations, along with tailored recommendations.

Similar to Google Gemini’s Live Conversation feature, users can point their camera at different foods to receive nutritional information and log meals instantly.

Healthify also demonstrated how Ria can be accessed through Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, allowing users to converse with the assistant and log food using the device’s camera in real time.

The company believes that real-time, conversational interactions will make users more comfortable and productive. In a single session, users can receive health insights, create workout plans, and record their goals. If a user forgets to log meals throughout the day, they can simply describe what they ate, and Ria will handle the logging automatically.

Expanding AI Integration and Personalization

Looking ahead, Healthify plans to make its conversational AI a central part of the onboarding process, enabling the collection of valuable insights from natural, unstructured conversations. This approach mirrors trends seen in modern dating apps, which use similar interfaces to improve user experiences.

To further personalize recommendations, Healthify is developing a persistent memory layer for its AI, allowing Ria to remember user preferences and health changes over time.

Additionally, Ria will be available during interactions with coaches and nutritionists, helping both users and professionals access relevant data and answers even when a coach isn’t present. The assistant will also join calls with coaches and nutritionists to transcribe conversations and provide insights on demand.

According to CEO Tushar Vashisht, Ria’s advice is grounded in years of real-world conversations between users and coaches, ensuring reliable and practical guidance.

Standing Out in a Competitive Market

While other health apps like Alma, Cal AI, MyfitnessPal, and Ladder offer food logging via voice, text, or images, Healthify believes its live conversation mode, robust data integration, and AI trained on extensive historical data give it a competitive advantage. The app now also allows users to access their photo gallery, automatically detect food images, and easily log missed meals.

“Our goal is to build a nutrition-focused health ecosystem with seamless integrations,” said Paritosh Kumar, Healthify’s Chief Product Officer, in an interview with TechCrunch. “From an AI standpoint, we’re introducing mechanisms to help users stay accountable to their health goals.”

Growth, Expansion, and Future Plans

With over 45 million registered users and several million active each month, Healthify is rolling out a new AI-powered plan in the U.S., featuring the updated Ria assistant and meal planning for $20 per month. Previously, the company experimented with various plans combining text-based AI and certified nutrition experts.

Healthify is also preparing to announce new partnerships related to its GLP-1-supported weight loss programs and aims to integrate data from additional health tracking devices into Ria in the near future.

Given the company’s rapid growth and strong adoption in the U.S., CEO Vashisht mentioned that a new funding round may be on the horizon.
