Serbia’s Vulin views BRICS as better alternative to EU
Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin has expressed a strong preference for BRICS over the European Union (EU), citing the advantages it offers Serbia.
In an interview with National Defense magazine, Vulin emphasised that BRICS provides more favorable terms without imposing political conditions or demanding internal changes.
He stated, "There is no place for Serbia in the EU," pointing out that the EU has made limited efforts to fully integrate Serbia.
BRICS, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and six newly added countries, is seen by Vulin as a better fit for Serbia.
He highlighted that BRICS does not require Serbia to alter its laws or recognise Kosovo’s independence, a major issue in its relationship with the EU.
"They are not asking anything from us," Vulin remarked, contrasting this with the political demands often placed on EU candidates.
Vulin also emphasised BRICS' economic appeal, noting its control over 51% of the world’s gas and 47% of its oil.
He argued that BRICS provides Serbia an opportunity to cooperate with countries offering more favorable terms, without political strings attached.
Serbia, according to Vulin, values cooperation based on mutual respect, neutrality, and equality.
He firmly stated that Serbia will not impose sanctions on Russia or engage in conflicts just to join the EU.
Vulin’s comments suggest a potential shift in Serbia’s global alliances, with BRICS offering an attractive alternative as the bloc expands its influence.
His advocacy for BRICS reflects the growing appeal of the group for nations seeking alternatives to Western-led institutions like the EU.
