xAI Faces Legal Action Over Data Center Air Pollution
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI is facing legal action over its use of gas turbines at its “The Colossus” data center in Memphis. The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), representing the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), has sent xAI a 60-day notice of intent to sue, alleging violations of the Clean Air Act. According to SELC, xAI has installed and operated at least 35 gas turbines over the past year without obtaining the required pre-construction or operating air permits. These units could emit more than 2,000 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) annually, posing a serious threat to local air quality.
