Ethereum (ETH) has fallen about 45% from its August high of $4,950, and this drop is more than a normal market pullback. A lot of activity has shifted from Ethereum’s main chain to cheaper, faster Layer 2 networks, which means fewer fees, weaker burn pressure, and slowly declining interest from large investors. The market is reacting to a deeper change in how Ethereum is used and how much value flows back to ETH holders. • ETH Price Over the Last 5 Months Ethereum’s decline happened in steps. In August and early September, ETH slipped from $4,950 to the $4,500–$4,700 range as sellers gained control. By October, ETH dropped to around $4,100 after several weak bounce attempts. Liquidity also thinned, making it harder for the price to recover. In November, ETH broke below $3,700 and couldn’t push back above $3,900. The sharpest fall came in mid-November, when ETH sank to around $2,700 before rising slightly to $3,000 by early December. Throughout these months, buyers were weaker, trading volume dropped, and each rally was quickly sold off as more users moved to Layer 2s. • Why Layer 2s Are Reducing ETH’s Value Ethereum’s main issue is that most activity has moved to Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, where transactions are cheaper and faster. This shift means the mainnet processes fewer fee-generating transactions, which leads to lower burn rates and a weaker deflation story. The economic value that once went to ETH holders now mostly goes to Layer 2 sequencers. Ethereum is scaling successfully, but the benefits are flowing away from the ETH token itself. • Ethereum 2026 Outlook: Three Possible Paths 1. Bullish Scenario (Best Case) ETH could recover if it stays above $3,000 and if Layer 2s begin sharing part of their revenue with ETH stakers. This would help rebuild confidence and bring institutions back to ETH ETFs. More high-value activity could also return to Layer 1, improving fee burn. If these conditions line up, ETH may climb into the $5,200–$6,420 range. 2. Base Scenario (Most Likely) In a middle-ground situation, ETH stays steady between $2,500 and $2,800. Layer 2 activity keeps growing, but most revenue still stays off-chain. ETF inflows remain positive but not huge, and developer attention spreads across Ethereum, Solana, and other fast networks. Under these conditions, ETH may trade mostly between $4,000 and $5,200 through 2026. 3. Bearish Scenario (Worst Case) If ETH falls below $2,400, confidence may weaken quickly, especially if staking yields drop below 1.8%. Layer 1 competitors and strong Layer 2 tokens could pull more users away, pushing mainnet fees even lower. If the macro environment stays tough, ETH could drift toward the $2,500–$3,400 range, with recovery depending heavily on stronger incentives for stakers and users.
