On Thursday, TikTok revealed a new feature called “bulletin board,” which enables brands and creators to send public, one-way messages to their audience. This tool is TikTok’s answer to Instagram’s broadcast channels, which debuted in 2023.

Similar to Instagram’s broadcast channels, only the bulletin board’s creator can share posts, while followers can only respond with emoji reactions. Bulletin boards allow for sharing text, images, and videos.

This feature is being introduced to creators who are at least 18 years old and have a minimum of 50,000 followers.

The purpose of this tool is to help creators and brands foster a sense of community by sharing updates, news, and exclusive content with their followers. Instead of using Stories or regular TikTok posts, creators can now use the bulletin board for announcements. It also allows accounts to directly notify their followers about new content.

The introduction of this feature isn’t unexpected, as TikTok was seen testing it back in June.

According to TikTok, during the beta testing, musicians and artists used bulletin boards to share new music releases and encourage followers to pre-save upcoming tracks. People Magazine and Paris Saint-Germain also utilized the feature to distribute news and updates.

“As with all content on TikTok, everything must comply with our Community Guidelines, which are enforced through both automated technology and human review,” TikTok stated in a blog post. “Safety features such as muting, blocking, and reporting are available within the bulletin board to help maintain a secure and welcoming community.”

To create a bulletin board, creators can access their inbox and select the relevant option. They have the ability to turn the “Show on profile” setting on or off to control who can see their bulletin board, and can also choose a name for it.

If users want to join a bulletin board, they can tap the board’s name located under the creator’s bio on their profile. Once a follower joins, they’ll get notifications in their inbox whenever the creator posts to the bulletin board.
